The much-celebrated Il Toscano “the Tuscan” has been a venerable name in fine Tuscan-influenced Italian dining in Queens for nearly 30 years and is a Fred Bollaci Enterprises Preferred Destination.
Il Toscano began in 1985 as the dream of Mauro Privilegi, who cultivated his culinary skills at an early age working on the Italian cruise ships, where he learned that good cooking came from using what was fresh, what was seasonal and what was the best ingredients on hand that day. Mauro saw the need to fill a void in the Douglaston area for upscale, authentic, Italian fine dining. Once in the United States, Mauro spent 19 years working at the five-star Hotel Pierre in New York City, until the opportunity arose to open his own restaurant.
Il Toscano Ristorante is a dream come true for Mauro and his family. His Son, Alex Privilegi is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York and lived in Montefollonico, Italy for one year where he sharpened his skill sought to bring new and innovative ideas to the restaurant while still maintaining the classic, Old World Tuscan-inspired Italian style of cuisine his family’s restaurant has been famous for.
Mauro and Alex find great pleasure in continuing to serve exceptional food in a beautiful atmosphere in their one and only location where every night you can find either Mauro or Alex paying close attention to every detail. Everything from the handmade pastas and gnocchi, to the excellent seafood (the signature dish, “Lobster Il Toscano” features 2 – 1 lb Lobsters cracked, in the shell and sauteéd in extra Virgin Olive Oil with Garlic, Lemon, White Wine and a pinch of hot Pepper, and is also available out of the shell served either over spinach or linguini is absolutely spectacular and worth the trip to Douglaston from anywhere to experience).
The staff is friendly and accommodating, and even suggested half servings of pastas so our group could sample more. Il Toscano features a bountiful and approachable wine list with selections from all around the world, including of course Italy and the United States.
With Italian family living in Douglaston, Il Toscano has been a favorite since I was a child growing up on Long Island! The restaurant serves dinner Tuesday-Sunday, and features a great “Tuscan Family Menu” for Sunday dinner, featuring a choice of delicious antipasti (including luscious Veal Meatballs), and a selection of exciting entrees, as well as a menu for children).
Il Toscano is a PERFECT stop on your way back from US Open Tennis at Flushing, literally 30 steps from the Douglaston train station, a great place to park, ride, and then dine after! Il Toscano is a choice spot for larger parties with several private rooms.
See you in Douglaston, and please tell Mauro, Alex, and family that Fred Bollaci sent you!
