Circa 1916, Pierce Wall had a thriving beach business on the North Shore of LongIsland. Wall’s Baths catered to the beach crowd providing facilities for showers, changing areas, swimming privileges and snack stands. It was a summer favorite for beach goers, with its spectacular view of the Long Island Sound and the Connecticut Coast.
In 1945, Paul J. Reinhardt purchased the business and property. His vision was to create a restaurant with fair prices, good food and beach privileges. He renamed the business Wall’s Beach Restaurant, keeping the name Wall in honor of the first proprietor. In 1946, Paul rebuilt the building with a handful of men, including his brother Ed Reinhardt and his brother-in-law Ralph Murphy. The building was constructed with steel beams with the intention of having a second story, however due to WWII, supplies were limited. The building had to remain one story with a flat roof. Wall’s Beach quickly became a favorite spot, renown for its great seafood, prime steaks, Prime Rib, and of course its magnificent water view.
In 1970, the business was sold to someone outside the family and remained open for approximately six months. In 1971, Paul Reinhardt’s son, Bill, bought back the property and business. His intention has been to create a comfortable atmosphere with a fine dining experience. The name was changed to Wall’s Wharf, affectionately referred to as “The Wharf”, or “Wally’s” by many locals. Beach privileges are no longer permitted, but patrons can still walk along our private beach and enjoy the spectacular view.
